On our recent winter break, we traveled south to Wilmington, Charleston and Atlanta, noting cool designs, fun storefronts, and interesting packaging ideas along the way. Per usual. The more we saw, the more we noticed the plethora of one design trick in particular: the monogram. Whether it was one initial or every letter of a company name, it was hard to ignore.
I love a monogram. Especially when done well. And especially maybe because mine is so…not cool: EAR. Though it is funny/ironic on a pair of earrings I was given.
Here are just a few of the monograms we spotted in our southern swing. I’m inspired by the hierarchy of elements, mix of color and pattern, use of negative space, and the overall puzzle of fitting the letters together in dynamic ways.
